Announcing 2016 individual-enrollment expeditions. Individual students ages 15-19 are invited to apply to participate in the following No Barriers Youth Expeditions:
• Grand Canyon Sound Academy
Celebration of the NPS Centennial
A group of 20 blind, visually impaired and sighted teenagers from across the U.S. will be selected to receive scholarships for a once-in-a-lifetime leadership adventure: Grand Canyon Sound Academy. Over the course of 12 days, students will journey into the heart of Grand Canyon, learning about the importance of natural sounds, participating in meaningful science, learning about career opportunities with the National Park Service, and honing their leadership strengths. At the end of this transformative expedition, students emerge as leaders ready to face personal and global barriers with passion and perseverance and inspired and equipped to be the next generation of ambassadors for the National Park Service.
• Peruvian Highlands
This expedition takes Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth on a life-changing adventure trekking into the heart of the Andes, volunteering with deaf schools in Peru and exploring the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu.
• Leadership in the Peruvian Amazon
Students set off on a boat down the Amazon River headed to a lodge nestled in a protected rainforest. Pink river dolphins follow your trail as blue and gold macaws shriek in the distance. Dugout canoes drift with the current carrying families to market. Large ships loaded with tropical timber carry tress to the city. The river swirls with life. You see economic progress. You see poverty. You see deforestation. And you’ve only just arrived. You decide you want to understand. You decide you’re ready to unleash your potential and discover the power you have to make a difference.
